Bought this as a gift for my wife and she loves it. Dont have to worry about the filter breaking as it is plastic.
The walls of the glass teapot's body are too thin. It's a compromise to give up the more stylish, clean appearance of the glass bodum for the more trustworthy construction of the plastic teapot, but in my opinion, its the safer choice. Mine fractured around the base of the handle, and thankfully I noticed it before anything more severe could take place. Over the past 3 years I've owned both a plastic and a glass teapot in the 34-oz size. I personally rate this at 3 stars. As for the plastic teapots, they are much more reliable in terms of use, hence the 4 stars.
Take the Assam teapots. First, the glass teapot (Bodum Assam 34-Ounce Glass Tea Press with Stainless-Steel Filter). After several months of daily use, the handles of the glass teapots cannot withstand the weight of a full pot of tea. However, the tea press filter is made of plastic, not stainless steel, which became badly stained within the first month of use with a black ceylon tea. I've always appreciated Bodum's stylish designs, but I haven't always been impressed by their functionality.
Both have worked effectively, yet both had an eventual downfall. Other reviewers have had issues where their pot has shattered completely, which tells me this was not an isolated incident.
However I don't like the #5 plastic infuser that it comes with. Who knows what this plastic releases at higher temperatures. The tea I find from this product to be good. It'd be more comfortable with using a stainless steel infuser.
In particular, I like the way the tea basket is designed, with no holes on the bottom third. The Bodum Assam Teapot is attractive, sturdy, and easy-to-clean. This makes it possible for the tea basket to have much larger "vents" without introducing much sediment to the tea, making it easier to clean than the typical baskets which use very fine metal mesh.
My advice to people who drink more than one kind of tea is to spring for the more expensive stainless steel infuser. There's no way to have it covered when the infuser is removed. This is a good product and works really well, and amazon has a great price on it; however, be advised that the infuser is PLASTIC, so if you make flavored teas in it, the flavor lingers. One other minor issue--it ought to come with a separate lid for serving in case you remove the infuser to add something to the pot (milk, for example).
